Violent crime in New Orleans has unfortunately left many families with a familiar feeling - a feeling of devastation and loss. While some arrests have been made in homicide cases, giving families some closure, others are left in the dark.
That’s the case for the family of Bryan, Bradley and Brandon Veal. They are three brothers who were murdered within seven days of each other.
From the time of their murders in February 2021 until May 10, 2022, the Metropolitan Crime Commission recorded nearly 300 additional homicides. With that many cases to solve, their father wonders if he’ll ever get justice in his son’s brutal murders.
More than one year after losing their boys in one week, the family says they are still in the dark both literally and figuratively. The Veal family agreed to speak with WWL-TV with anonymity, shielding their names and faces from television cameras.
“To know that whoever the perpetrators are, are still walking around doing whatever and we have no idea who they could be or who they are,” says a family member. “So, for us to just come out and talk openly about it, it’s frightening.”
While you haven’t seen their faces, they’ve made sure their thoughts and voices are heard and seen. One voice we are hearing for the first time is that of the boy's father.
“My whole life has changed,” he says. “Anybody that’s experiencing death like that and then it being unsolved. There’s a super unfairness.”
The family members say they were out of town in Baton Rouge having dinner. When they parted ways, the boy’s father received a chilling phone call.

Lorain, Ohio – A family in Ohio is filing a federal civil rights lawsuit against an elementary school after a disturbing video shows a school cafeteria worker forcing a fourth-grade girl to eat a waffle she’d throw in the trash.
The shocking video, captured by school surveillance cameras inside the cafeteria of Palm Elementary in Lorain, shows the 9-year-old girl dumping her lunch tray, which contained a waffle, into the garbage in front of the worker. The cafeteria worker, later identified as Monika Sommers-Fridenstine, then fishes the waffle out of the trash bin, appears to wipe it off, and gives it back to the child to eat. All this happened while the school’s principal, Deborah Pustulka, stood by and did nothing, according to the suit.

Dayton, Oh. – Recently released police body camera footage shows Dayton Ohio Police Officers forcibly removing a paraplegic man from his car during a traffic stop for a window tint violation.
Clifford Owensby was pulled over in Dayton by police on Sept 30. Body camera video shows an officer testing the vehicle’s glass tint. The officer tells Owenby the window’s tint is at 20% and then sees a child in the backseat of the vehicle who is not in a car seat. The officer then goes back to his cruiser.
Later in the video, an officer tells Owensby to step out of the vehicle. When Owensby asks the officer why he needs to exit the car, the officer tells him that due to his history, they are going to have a drug-detecting dog do a search around the outside of the vehicle.
Owensby tells the officers he can’t get out of the vehicle because he is a paraplegic. Body camera footage showed officers telling Owensby they were going to assist him in getting out of the car.
“I’m paraplegic,” Owensby says. “I got help getting in.”
“Well, I’ll help you get out,” the officer replies.
“Well, I don’t think that’s going to happen, sir,” Owensby says.
The officer and Owensby continue to argue about him exiting the vehicle and Owensby requests that the officer call a superior to the scene.
“Here’s the thing, I’m going to pull you out, and then I’ll call a white shirt. Because you’re getting out of the car. That’s not an option. You’re getting out of this car, so you can cooperate and get out of the car, or I will drag you out of the car. Do you see your two options here?”
The standoff continues until officers pull and drag Owensby from the car onto the street. Owensby is cuffed and dragged to a police car.
Owensby, who said he does not have use of his legs, said he was injured during the incident, having sustained scrapes from the pavement, and is still in pain. He also said that a previous back injury was reinjured.
“I just feel like they were wrong for doing what they were doing and I couldn’t believe what was happening to me,” Owensby said.
Dayton Police said they are aware of the incident and the professional standards bureau is currently investigating.
“The investigation will include the review of any policies and training when encountering these situations. Detectives from the Professional Standards Bureau have already interviewed the driver in the video.
We ask the public to please be patient while all of the facts are gathered so we may have a clear understanding of what occurred and why in order to make informed decisions and continue to improve services,” Dayton Police said.

Five Miami Beach police officers are facing criminal charges after a shocking video caught them repeatedly kicking a handcuffed man and then tackling and repeatedly punching another man who was recording the arrest on his cellphone.
According to Miami-Dade State Attorney Katherine Fernandez Rundle, the incident occurred on July 26 when a police officer chased 24-year-old Dalonta Crudup into the Royal Palm Hotel in South Beach after he allegedly struck a bicycle cop with a scooter.
Miami Beach police say they were trying to conduct a traffic stop on Crudup because he had illegally parked the scooter at Ninth Street and Ocean Court. Police said after Crudup fled the scene, he hit one of the bicycle officers with his scooter.
Surveillance video from the hotel shows Crudup run into the hotel and try to get on the elevator before a lone officer stops him at gunpoint.
After surrendering and laying on the ground with his hands behind his back, 20 more officers swarm into the hotel and pile on Crudup.
“It is at this point the situation begins to change, in our opinion, from a legitimate arrest of a criminal suspect into an ongoing investigation of the use of force by five Miami Beach police officers,” Fernandez Rundle said at a news conference on Monday.
During the press conference, Fernandez Rundle played a four-minute compilation of body camera and security camera footage showing the incident.
In the video, Officer Kevin Perez can be seen kicking Crudup at least four times while he is on the ground with other officers on top of him. At one point, Officer Perez can also be seen lifting Crudup and slamming him to the ground. While going over the video at the press conference, Fernandez Rundle points out that Crudup’s head hits the floor as he is thrown to the ground by Officer Perez referring to the section of the video as the “head slam.”
Sgt. Jose Perez can also be seen kicking Crudup in the head while he is face down on the ground and in handcuffs.
Other officers then turned on 28-year-old Khalid Vaughn, who was standing in the hotel lobby filming Crudup’s arrest with his cell phone. According to Fernandez Rundle, Vaughn was standing approximately 12 to 15 feet away when officers approached him.
Body camera video shows officer Robert Sabater tackling Vaughn, as he appears to be backing away. Officers David Rivas and Steven Serrano allegedly helped Sabater pin Vaughn against a concrete pillar while all three officers punched him multiple times.
According to Fernandez Rundle, Vaughn was arrested and charged with impeding, provoking and harassing officers, however charges were dropped after she viewed the videos.
Crudup was charged with several counts, including aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer. The cop he allegedly struck was hospitalized and is on crutches, officials announced.
Crudup denies hitting the officer with the scooter and said it was not illegally parked.
“Yes, I was on a scooter. But I never hit an officer or anything like that,” Crudup said.
The five officers were charged with first-degree misdemeanor battery and suspended with pay. They all turned themselves in Monday, and may face further charges later, Fernandez Rundle said.

A police chief and an officer from Hamilton, Georgia have been asked to resign or face termination after body camera footage captured them using racial slurs and defending slavery.
Hamilton Chief of Police Gene Allmond resigned, and Patrolman John Brooks were fired last week after the video was discovered by a city employee who was checking to see if the body camera was functional.
The footage, which was recorded in June 2020, captures the two former policemen talking about a BLM march scheduled in Hamilton later that day.
During the conversation, the men reference the fatal police shooting of 27-year-old Rashard Brooks. Mr. Brooks was a Black man who was shot twice in the back on June 12 by an Atlanta police officer in a Wendy’s parking lot where he had fallen asleep in his car in the drive-through lane.
The two men can be heard in the video referring to Black people as “niggers” multiple times.
At one point Brooks talks about who they would rather have sex with: Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms or voting rights activist Stacey Abrams.
“If I had to fuck a nigger, I’d rather fuck the Mayor than Stacey Abrams,” Brooks said.
Later in the video, the former police chief defends slavery.
“I’m sure there were a lot of them mistreated, I don’t have no doubt about that. But for the most part, it seems to me like, they furnished them a house to live in. They furnished them clothes to put on their back. They furnished them food to put on their table and all they had to do was fucking work. And now we give ’em all those things and don’t have to fucking work,” Allmond said.
“That’s it. That’s it,” Brooks responds in apparent agreement.

The incident happened on Sunday, Dec. 13 when police attempted to pull over 23-year-old Xavier Tate for a minor traffic infraction. Instead of pulling over immediately, Tate chose to drive home and pull over there.
According to Tate’s mother, Lakeita Fletcher, her son was on his way to her place to pick up his dog when police attempted to pull him over because his window tints were too dark.
She said he didn’t immediately stop for police because she told him to pull over somewhere he feels safe if he is ever stopped by police.
“I always told my son, with what’s going on in the world right now with these cops jumping on these young Black men, if they ever get behind you, son, you take them to a store somewhere that’s open where you feel safe, or either if you close to home, you come home,” she said.
She told him not to speed or break any rules of the road, just to get to a place he thought was safe.
“He did just that,” she said.
