CIA and Cocaine - How the CIA sparked the Crack-Epidemic

This is bigger than Wikileaks.

In 1996 Pulitzer prize winning journalist Gary Webb wrote the Dark Alliance series, in which he exposed how the CIA had been shipping thousands of tons of cocaine from the country Nicaragua to the US.

In the so-called 'Iran-Contra scandal', the CIA funded, armed and trained the Contra rebel groups and death squads with the intent to overthrow the Nicaraguan government.

In return for CIA support, the Contra militia groups provided large amounts of cocaine. The CIA helped drug trafficker "Freeway" Rick Ross to create crack-cocaine, which was distributed in South Central Los Angeles, Oakland and other predominantly black neighbourhoods in the United States.

These events led to the crack-epidemic of the late 1980's and 1990's. The funds gained from the sale of cocaine was partially used to secretly support Saddam Hussain in the Iran-Iraq war (1980-1988).

Gary Webb, the journalist who exposed the scandal, was found dead in a hotel room with two shotgun wounds to the back of his head. His death was declared a suicide by the coroner's office.

http://democracynow.org - Florida lawmakers have apologized for what happened to four young African-American men in Groveland, Florida, nearly 70 years ago in 1949. The men, known as the Groveland Four, were falsely accused of raping a 17-year-old white girl. Before going to trial, one of the four men, Ernest Thomas, was hunted down and murdered by a mob of 1,000 men led by the local sheriff, Willis McCall. He was killed in a hail of gunfire. The other three men were tortured in jail until two of them gave false confessions. Charles Greenlee was sentenced to life. Walter Irvin and Samuel Shepherd were condemned to death. Just recently, Florida lawmakers passed a resolution saying, "We’re truly sorry." For more, we speak with Gilbert King, author of the Pulitzer Prize-winning book, "Devil in the Grove: Thurgood Marshall, the Groveland Boys, and the Dawn of a New America."

The man is named Ibn Ali:

This video recently went viral on Facebook gaining over 5 million views. A man breaks up fight between two teenage boys in their neighborhood. Positive images! Violence is never the answer, it is time to unite and live positive lives. #blackboyjoy #blackgirlmagic
ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. — A New Jersey man who interrupted a street fight between two teenagers in a video that has drawn millions of views and wide praise said Wednesday that he’s saddened that his act of peacemaking isn’t a more frequent occurrence.

“I’m crying because, this whole situation, it deeply saddens me,” Ibn Ali Miller said after being honored by Atlantic City’s council along with the boys. “It deeply saddens me, the fact that it’s unbelievable. This should be very believable, this should be a norm and this should be regular.”

The video had been viewed millions of times after being posted on Facebook on Monday. It starts with a fistfight in Atlantic City between two boys while others record it on their phones.

Miller then walks up, gets between the two and tells the onlookers that they’re cowards for recording the scuffle.

“Look, they laughing. Look,” Miller says while gesturing to the gathered crowd. “He’s got a big smile on his face. … He’s supposed to be your man.”

The stranger then tells the teens they are “almost men” and need to start acting like it.

Miller broke down in tears while thanking his mom, who stood beside him, in Atlantic City Wednesday night. He said that she forced him to read books and write a short story or poem each time he was punished as a child. He also thanked the mothers of the two boys, who stood next to him.

“They raised them to be young men of reason, which seems to be a very, very rare trait in today’s youth,” he said.

One of the boys, Jamar Mobley, thanked Miller for intervening and told CBS Philly that the fight could have gone “a whole other way” if Ibn Ali Miller hadn’t stepped in.

“He was minding his business and just came out of the car,” Mobley said. “He said I will not leave until you guys shake hands.”

Miller has drawn wide praise, including a message of support on Twitter from LeBron James, who saluted the man “who stepped in and spoke real to our young generation.”

TimeMag-New Jersey man who is being hailed a hero after he was captured in a viral video breaking up a fight between two young men said he stepped in to stop the violence “because it was the right thing to do.” Ibn Ali Miller, 26, has received widespread praise online, including from NBA star Lebron James, after he defused a fistfight that erupted in the middle of the street in Atlantic City earlier this week and convinced the brawlers to shake hands and walk away.

More than 28 million people have viewed the video since it was posted on Facebook on Monday. Miller can be seen urging the youngsters not to bring shame to their hardworking parents and tells them he refuses to leave until they make peace. “I just didn’t want those kids to fight. More importantly, I didn’t want one of those kids to lose the fight,” Miller told TIME. “Sometimes when you’re young like that, and you lose a fight in front of your friends and it goes on Facebook, it could hurt you for a long time.” Miller, a married father of six who has lived in Atlantic City his whole life, said he was driving in his car after running errands on Monday when he spotted the crowd of teenagers on the street. He said he immediately got out of his car to approach them without thinking he was walking into possible danger. “I stepped in just because it was the right thing to do,” he said. “Those kids didn’t look like predators to me. To me, I saw my own kids. I didn’t see predators.” Miller has been praised as a peacemaker and a Good Samaritan. James said Miller’s actions were “so dope” in a tweet. James added: “Salute the homie who stepped in and spoke real to our young generation. We all need a word or 2 to help!”Miller, a self-employed contractor, is also being honored by his local City Council on Wednesday even though he believes he didn’t do anything exceptional.“I’m a Muslim. I was raised by Muslim parents. That’s what we were taught in my house, always, growing up,” he said. “For me, I don’t look at it like I’m a peacemaker. I did what I was supposed to do, what I was raised to do.”
